What was of major concern to them, was the emphasis President Xi placed upon continued mutual cooperation in the area of science for those Chinese scientists with the US scientists. They are worried that China will lag behind the knowledge acquired heretofore in the realm of science, needful though it is in China, especially since the COVID-19 epidemic.
They talked about scientists from both countries learning from each other!
I believe they are simply expressing and acknowledging the West's advances in knowledge and practice of medicine, and affirm that scientists in China want to be involved in cooperative ventures.
My impression of their concern lest they fall behind.
