The Economist is reporting that Japan and the Philippines, longtime friends, are joining together to resist Chinese pressure to join a Chinese-sponsored group of nations known as "First Island Chain." That in addition to the occasional skirmishes in the East China Sea of each of their country's ships with Chinese vessels.
