History keeps one related, gives self identity. But it is a mistake that it doesn't recognize that a country changes interests and relationships over time. especially if the time is a long time!
So that the communists provided impetus to realize China's independence is no reason to think that Taiwan should think itself integral to the interests that bespeak the Taiwan of today. More importantly, China must concern itself with the problems it, as a nation, must confront that have little to do with Taiwan, e.g., the effects of climate change upon their homeland. Obviously, China is in the vicinity of Taiwan, so both have certain interests in common, e.g., manufacturing batteries for cars.
Then too, Taiwanese share interests with the Japanese. So, hardly, should China think it claim Japan as its territory! Absurd. Care should be taken to define one's country sovereignty.
My opinion.
